Sam Deeran

Shoebox Collaborations is operated by Sam Deeran. Sam brings his experiences working in strategy, management, organizing, communications, and fundraising to this work. He has worked on national and statewide electoral campaigns, the rapid ascent of a Maine non-profit, and a fundraising campaign to raise $35M.

Sam has worked with tribal governments and organizations, federal and state agencies, colleges and universities, public radio, political candidates, philanthropists, and communities in Maine and New Hampshire. His time performing improv and stand-up has helped a bit, too.

Sam’s writing about Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument appeared in Our National Monuments by QT Luong. During his time at Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters, he was fortunate to be a part of the establishment of an International Dark-Sky Sanctuary, and to partner with a Wabanaki Advisory Board to produce this video and work on the campaign that led to the opening of Tekαkαpimək Contact Station.

Books and writing that influence his work include Against Crisis Epistemology by Kelly Whyte, Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown, and Saving Time by Jenny Odell.

Why “Shoebox”?

It’s Shoebox for two reasons: 1) this is a small shop and 2) shoeboxes hold significant stories. Photographs, old letters, and knick-knacks—the things we store away for safekeeping—tell us a story about ourselves. What’s in your organization’s shoebox?
